Interesting period architecture dominates this picturesque little Cape Karoo town, which is a welcome port-of-call on the north-south route along the N1 highway.
Back in the day, travelers stopped at its river, which offered the only drinkable water in an area abundant with lions! The last of the extinct Cape Lion was shot here in 1857. Both the words ‘Leeu’ and ‘Gamka’ mean lion.
